If We Knew Better, We'd Move Better: The Seeds of Movement (eBook)
If We Knew Better, We'd Move Better: The Seeds of Movement (eBook)
Your kid is going to move better than you. Or they won't.
The window between ages two and eight is when their body decides how it's going to move for the rest of their life. Most kids spend that window picking up the worst habits of the adults around them. The cost shows up later as pain, injury, lost confidence, and a body that quietly fights itself for sixty more years.
This book is the answer to that.
What changes for you
- You stop wondering why your body hurts after sitting all day, why your shoulders are tight, why your run feels heavier than it used to. The book names the gap, walks you through it, and gives you tools you can use the same hour you finish reading.
- You stop hoping your kid will figure out movement on their own. You start coaching them with the same intentionality you use for reading and writing. You hand them a body they can trust.
- You stop guessing whether the hour your athlete spent at practice was actually building anything. You learn to see what the body is doing, what it's avoiding, and where the leak is.
What you walk away with
- A coaching framework that works on a four-year-old, a college athlete, a parent, and a seventy-year-old. The same framework, every time.
- Cues you'll use for life: Home Base, Face in the Base, Toes to the Nose, the Run Song.
- Twelve drills you can do anywhere, no equipment needed. Two minutes a day rewires the patterns most adults never get the chance to fix.
- The vocabulary to coach better movement on the spot — in your living room, at your kid's practice, in your morning routine.
- A real answer when someone asks you why some people just move better than others.
"No one in the history of mankind has ever felt worse for moving better."
Who picks this up
- Parents who want their child's body to outlast them, not collapse on them.
- Coaches and educators who already know movement matters and want a real framework to teach it.
- Adults who are done living with a body that hurts more than it should.
If movement has been an afterthought your whole life, this is the book that turns it into a daily practice. The way we move matters. This puts the tools in your hand.

I bought this thinking it was a fitness book. It's the parenting book nobody warned me I needed.
Coach Stokes lays out what he calls the two-eight window. The years between ages two and eight when a child's movement patterns get programmed for life. Not learned. Programmed. The same way reading gets installed. The same way most of us never even thought about because nobody taught us either.
Early on there's a story about a tennis player he coached. Elite, world-class, but her body was visibly tilted from years of left-side dominance. You could see it from across the court. Nobody had taught her how to find her base. The damage was already baked in by the time she had the racket in her hand.
I read that and thought about my own daughter. About how I clap when she runs but have never once asked if she's running well.
The Home Base chapter alone is worth the price. I put the book down, tried it standing in my kitchen, then made my husband and daughter try. She got it faster than us. Encouraging and humbling at the same time.
The bonus drill section in the back is the real gift. Simple movements. Clean cues. Things you can actually do with your kid this afternoon. No equipment, no excuses (although I did end up ordering the Two8 Bands after).
It reads like a coach who has been waiting for someone to ask the right question, and now he's answering it for everyone.
If your kid is under nine, read it now. If your kid is older, read it anyway. You will never watch a playground the same way again.
This is on my baby shower gift list from here forward.
This is an interesting look at how vital and intentional movement is in the lives of our child. We love to tell people to be active and place the expectation of being active solely in their responsibility, without considering the fact that there are ingrained roadblocks and barriers based on the culture and the societies that we grow up in. These make it extremely challenging to lead a consistently active lifestyle.
This book unlocks a lot of misnomers and provides tactical strategies and applications to help folks actually guide their children to a place where being active and moving more is not just a hobby or an extracurricular activity. It's a normalized part of everyday life and something that you look forward to, and your children look forward to.
The best analogy I could give is like getting your kids excited about eating vegetables. It's doable, and the more they know, the more it's possible. How much of a win is it when that is their normal part of life? The only thing about that analogy is that vegetables are quite boring, but being able to move well isn't boring. It's letting your kids feel like superheroes, and for that, it's hard to put a price on how valuable this information is for parents and for educators and coaches around the world.
